The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is a government organization whose function is to recruit candidates for various group B, C and D posts in various ministries and departments across the government. They hold a variety of competitive exams and departmental exams for this purpose. The SSC also conducts periodical typewriting tests in English and Hindi.
The SSC first started out as the Subordinate Services Commission. The Subordinate Services Commission was set up on November 4, 1975, after considering a suggestion mentioned in the 47th report of the Estimates Committee of Parliament. The report suggested that a service selection commission be set up to conduct examinations for recruitment for a few categories of posts from the UPSC.
